Welcome to Shake Rattle and Paddle!

Dan Blanch and John McDowell have been hunting the woods of British Columbia for the past thirty years. Throughout the years of hunting they watched, experienced and learned. They listened to the elk and the moose. They listened to the sound their horns made raking through the willows, they listened to the sounds they made when there was confrontation between animals and they listened to the different calls communicated between the bulls and the cows when they are in the rut. It was through these observations that they developed the “Shake Rattle & Paddle”.

Originally, it started with the call. After much practice and experience they learned not only when but also, how to use the call to make it work to their advantage. Once the call was mastered they introduced the scent. Elk and moose have a very keen sense of smell. They can easily pick up the scent of man, so it is extremely important that you mask the smell. Not only do you need to mask the smell of man but you also need to replicate the smell of another elk or moose.

Elk and moose have poor vision so Dan and John began to focus on how they could use this to their advantage. From a distance they were convinced that they could mimic the animal so that another would believe it to be either a cow or another bull. This is when they designed a paddle, which resembles the antlers on the animal. By running this paddle through the willows you give the illusion of a moose or elk marking his territory or moving through the area.

Now, armed with the paddle, covered with the scent and a mastery of the call they went out. It was when they combined these different features that things really began to happen. What they were about to experience from that day forward was beyond their wildest imagination. You may think this is crazy, but they became one with these majestic animals.

Their focus began to change, the challenge now became one in which they could actually bring the animal to them, through the communication techniques of sight, scent and sound. At first they thought their methods were just a fluke, but time after time they were able to bring the animals to them. This was such an incredible experience that they are currently in the process of producing a video so that they are able to share with you the bringing in of a moose or an elk. This video also shows you how to make an item that replicates the calls of a moose bull or cow.
